When Adam and Eve saw God walking in their garden, in the cool of the evening, they hid themselves in shame. When Christians come to the end of their day, they are encouraged instead to walk, with a loving God, through all that has happened.
The Church has always encouraged us to find some time for prayer and reflection. It is a rich tradition, encouraged in childhood and developed in the official Prayer of the Church. The tangle of achievement, change and challenge, that makes up each day is a rich source of personal wisdom and growth. But it is also the place where we come face to face with God.
This book is a way to reflect on the day, either as a group, or to use as a personal bedside prayer book. It is based on the Prayer of the Church, combining aspects of the evening prayer of the church with night prayer. The format has emerged from use in Salesian communities, and much of the spirituality comes from the optimistic and gentle inspiration of St Francis de Sales. It challenges us to find God in the evening and grow in awareness of God’s abiding presence throughout the day.

Prayer books (that is, books to pray with rather than books on prayer) come in all shapes and sizes these days, but Prayers to Close the Day,published
by Don Bosco Publications UK and with the unmistakeable hand of Fr David O'Malley SDB behind it is a 'size' that will fit many readers' needs.
Intended in the first instance for communities or groups, it is just as useful for individuals who are looking to conclude a day with quiet yet lively
prayer.  But there are some surprises.

The language is fresh throughout - the author has adopted the idea of the four week cycle and a
hint or two of the Evening Prayer traditional structure but has felt very free to adapt, paraphrase and generally cajole the structure into what I
might image as gently flowing 'pools of prayer'.

Perhaps another surprise is that although the style of this prayer comes out of a
particular and distinctive spirituality, that of St Francis de Sales in the first instance, and St John Bosco and St Mary Mazzarello, 'disciples' of
his spirituality, the 'non-Salesian' will not feel that he or she is dipping into a strange flow .  The spirituality is of home, Church, parish and
even playground, in typical Don Bosco style, and as expressed in this collection of prayer, emerges from a rich community style practised in at least
132 of the world's 190 or so nations!

Prayers to Close the Day is a companion volume to another, similar collection Prayers to Start
the Day.  Together they offer a fresh approach to the long-established tradition of Morning and Evening Prayer in the Christian Church.
